Bloom Box Showcase - Week 1 Planning
This week saw the start of semester two within my course and the next assignment involves the planning of a graduate showcase to display my works and enter into the industry.
My initial ideas for the showcase involved thinking of a location and theme. Locations that would work well for a floral art show include central London as similar events have been held there in the past and there is an opportunity for a large audience in the art sector. Other locations I considered included Manchester, as there is a hub of event companies that would be a good audience for my work and commissions. Nottingham holds the largest floristry convention each year so this is another possibility.
When thinking of the venue itself, there are certain elements I need to ensure the space has. These include good lighting and a space large enough to hold multiple pieces of work. I also need to consider the ability to hang from the wall and ceiling and the accessibility and footfall of the venue. I also thought about how my venue may relate to my practice in terms of flowers and nature. For example, previous exhibitions have been held at Kew Gardens. Although this is not achievable with my budget, thoughts can be taken from this.
I would like the theme for the showcase to involve nature as this is evident within all of my work and an element of sustainability/re-using. I also need to consider who my audience are which includes event companies/organiseds and curators for other exhibitions. Other people within the florist sector may take an interest in my work. However, I do not believe these are my main target audience.
In terms of what I want to exhibit, I want to include multiple installations of floral art. Possibly six pieces of work? I want the designs to be tangeable and the audience able to walk around the pieces and feel something. I want to create experiences with my work.
The next step for planning involves working out a budget for the showcase and beginning to look at venues. Stay tuned for my next steps.
