Bloom Box Showcase - Week 2
Week two of planning for the Bloom Box Showcase involved benchmarking other professional showcases and taking inspiration from these. It also involved collecting relevant research sources to reference throughout the project.
One of the showcases I looked at was the Floral Era's Exhibition. This showcase involves 15 floral artists each having a space to exhibit within a town house in Brighton. This source is possibly the most relevant to the project as it is similar to what I am hoping to create which is a showcase of purely floral art made with plant materials. If I attending this showcase it could also offer opportunities to showcase there and network with other artists. The location of the exhibition is interesting as works are displayed from the ceilings, walls and mantlepieces which puts the works into familiar settings which can showcase to clients how the installations may work for them.
Another exhibition source is 'In Bloom: Flowers in Contemporary Art' which was held at the Saatchi Gallery. This involved multiple pieces of work from varying artists who use the concept of flowers in their disciplines from photography to fashion and sculpture. Rebecca Louise Law features in this exhibition with a large scale installation of dried flowers. This piece is most like what I am hoping to create and this source can be used to draw lots of inspiration from. The purpose of the exhibition was to celebrate natures timeless role in inspiring art.
A technical source relevant to this project is an article titled 'Suspending Flower Arrangements' from Lavender Green. This can be used within the planning to decide how and where the installations will be placed and how suspending them can be achieved within the space. This source offers advice on what to consider including flower types and sizes of the works.
Another relevant source is this blog I found on how to market an art exhibition. With a precious exhibition within the course, the marketing could have been improved a lot and I feel like this is something that could really help with a floral exhibition and getting visuals out there online. The blog suggests social media and engaging with the local art community are two big factors. I can use these going forward to advertise and immerse myself more into the art world.
FleurEx is the largest floral industry show that is held within the UK each year. It is held by the British Floral Association and features exhibitions from industry brands and floral designers. I am a member of the BFA and have attended this event in the past competing within floral categories so feel as though this event is important to the industry. This source is relevant as it showcases how my discipline links to the industry and the current events happening that are similar.
